Dissemination Event in Tallinn: A Collaborative Step Forward for CCUS

The recent CCUS dissemination event in Tallinn, Estonia was a significant opportunity for the CCUS ZEN project to exchange and interact with the HERCCULES project, which shares a common vision for a decarbonised Europe. This meeting fostered collaboration and knowledge sharing, enabling both projects to align their strategies and reinforce their commitment to achieving carbon neutrality.

The CCUS ZEN project has entered its maturation stage. After completing extensive mapping exercises on both technical and non-technical aspects, as detailed by WP1 and WP2, the project has applied a rigorous methodology to identify the most promising CCUS hubs and clusters in the Baltic and Mediterranean Sea regions. These areas were selected based on their potential for significantly reducing industrial emissions through CCS and CCU. The project is now focused on developing technical plans, conducting risk and impact assessments, and creating business cases for developing two selected European areas where CCUS was previously not extensively planned.

This comprehensive work is being shared with networking partners, local authorities, the public, investors, and the wider CCUS community. The project has successfully expanded its network, starting from the North Sea and extending across the Baltic to Estonia and across the Mediterranean Sea to Turkey, creating synergies with other CCUS projects along its path.

Key Highlights from the Tallinn event:

  1. Presentation of Findings:
    • Both projects presented their latest findings, showcasing the advancements in identifying and developing CCUS hubs and clusters, and demonstration of CCUS technology. The detailed mapping and assessments provided valuable insights into the feasibility and impact of CCUS in the selected regions.
    • Romain Viguier from SCCS presented an overview of the CCUS ZEN project, highlighting key results now accessible on the project’s website.
    • Leandro-Henrique Sousa from Ramboll discussed initial work on the techno-economic modelling of the Baltic CCUS scenario, covering Denmark, Sweden, and Germany.
    • Ingvild Ombudstvedt from IOM Law presented regulatory aspects, highlighting identified obstacles and barriers to overcome. A summary of non-techincal reports can be found here.
    • Alla Shogenova from TalTech shared the analysis of the value chain scenarios in the Baltic and Mediterranean regions.
  2. Panel Discussion on Regulations, Public Acceptance, and Policies:
    • In-depth discussions addressed non-technical questions related to the implementation of CCUS technologies. Experts from both projects (including experts from CCUS ZEN Networking Partners Global CCS Institute and Bellona Europe) shared their experiences and explored potential solutions to common issues.
  3. Networking:
    • The meeting provided ample opportunities for interaction and networking, cementing relationships between the CCUS ZEN project and the academic and industry partners involved in the HERCCULES project.
  4. Synergy Creation:
    • This meeting provided opportunities to create new synergies between the two projects, especially in the ambition to decarbonise the cement industry and waste-to-energy plants with CCS. This collaboration paves the way for future joint efforts and shared resources, strengthening the impact of CCUS technologies in Europe.
  5. Future Plans:
    • The meeting also outlined future plans and next steps for both projects. Participants discussed upcoming milestones, potential challenges, and opportunities for further collaboration.

The CCUS dissemination event in Tallinn showcased the power of collaboration and the importance of sharing knowledge and resources in working towards a decarbonised Europe. As the CCUS ZEN project continues to make progress, it remains committed to fostering strong partnerships and driving innovation in carbon capture, utilisation, and storage technologies.
